My free shirt this Friday is from the site FriendShirt.me. They create custom t-shirts using all of the your Facebook friends’ profile images. As you can see, they took my Google AdSense pic…

And turned it into a mosaic of all my FB friends pictures. Pretty cool! Thanks for the free shirt, FriendShirt.me.

Irashai Grill Open House
Irashai Grill held an open house last night and invited the Dot Com Crew down for a night of food and Sake tasting. When the invite says free food and Sake, we don’t need much pushing to attend. Located in the heart of Coal Harbour in Vancouver’s downtown core, Irashai Grill serves upscale Japanese dishes inspired by the best of Tokyo, Paris and Rome.
Under the direction of General Manager Ray Mok and Executive Head Chef Ikoma Kenjiro, Irashai Grill offers deceptively simple creations — mixing and melding French and Italian techniques and materials with Japanese classics and a variety of Asian spices.
While the room isn’t very big, it is nicely done with a good mix of East meets West. The food that we sampled were extremely fresh and tasty. The chefs in the open kitchen did a pretty remarkable job at maintaining their composure considering how slammed they were. Lucky for Sarah and myself, we got there early so there was lots of dishes to sample. As the night went on and more guests showed up, it became a feeding frenzy. A server would barely get three foot out of the kitchen before getting mobbed by hungry vultures guests.
We will have to try Irashai Grill again on a regular night to get true taste of the menu. However, from the dishes that I’ve tried during the open house, I can tell you Irashai Grill would rank pretty high on the list of favorite Japanese restaurants.

Living The Dot Com Lifestyle – Rule 4
This is part four of my Living The Dot Com lifestyle series. It’s based on a presentation I gave at Third Tuesday Vancouver call how to run a million dollar business on two hours per day. Previous posts: Part 1. Part 2. Part 3.
Rule 4 – Use People
Originally, I was going to call rule 4, use leverage, but use people is just so much more in keeping with my root of all evil thing.
Most people don’t make enough money because they depend on only one source of revenue – themselves. You can only do so much. To live the dot com lifestyle, you need to remove yourself as the income source and leverage other resource. I leverage my blog, other sites and my ad network, which in term leverages the work of thousands of other people.
I Rather Have 1% of 100 People Than 100% of Myself
This is what allows me to live the dot com lifestyle. Thousands of other people work so I don’t have to. Let’s face it, no matter how much I try, I will never be able to match the output of a thousand people, or even 10 people for that matter. I would much rather make 1% of 1000 people than 100% of myself. Hell, I’ll take 1% of 100 people rather than 100% of myself. I do this because I’m generally a lazy person (just ask my wife). If I’m not interested in something, then it’s really hard for me to do it because it feels too much like work.
I’m really bad at web design and I can’t code worth a damn. However, I know people who can design and code and admin my servers. If I had to learn all those skills myself before getting started, I wouldn’t be here right now. You are never going to know everything. Find the people who have the skill set you’re looking for and use them. Work them to death if you have to.
If You Want Something Done Right, Don’t Do It Youself
Your success at living the dot com lifestyle will be largely determined by your ability to use other people. You need to get that, “If you want something done right, you have to do it yourself.” mentality out of your system. Don’t do it all yourself! Success is a team sport. Your new motto should be, “If you want something done right, let Michael Kwan do it.” Just replace Kwan with whoever you plan to use.

Experimenting with the Tweetmeme Button
I have been planning to run an experiment with the Tweetmeme button for a while, and today I finally got some time to integrate it in the blog. Now you will find the button after every single post, both in the blog and in the RSS feed.
I am using the Tweetmeme WordPress plugin for the integration. If you are using the widget, I suggest that you try the plugin instead, because it gives you the possibility to add your Twitter userid to the retweets.
The interesting thing is that Tweetmeme uses bit.ly as the default URL shortener, so I can even see how many retweets each of my past posts got. The average for the last 20 posts, for instance, is 26.9 retweets. This means that after I publish 20 more posts I will be able to measure the increase that the addition of the Tweetmeme button brought.
I will also track the possible increase on the number of referrals that Twitter will send, so stay tuned for the results.

Bing needs a hand edit to find itself
Last year Microsoft launched a new search engine which couldn’t find itself and obviously didn’t want to make the same mistake again.
It seems that the MSN Live Search results for each country have all been hand edited to include the geo-specific version of Bing.com as the top result. You can tell by the fact the URL being indexed is www.bing.com/?mkt=de-de when you search on MSN.de and www.bing.com/?mkt=en-gb when you search on MSN.co.uk
Those URL’s don’t exist and both redirect to a holding page so there is no way anybody would be linking to them. Google certainly isn’t indexing them.
Joking aside I’m looking forward to using Bing, about time somebody started eating into Googles 90+% market share in the UK. Most SEO’s with less than a few years experience probably don’t remember the days of optimising for more than one search engine.

Google Wave is the future of email
Words can’t easily describe how good Google Wave is, you just have to watch the video below to see for yourself.
Developers in the audience are applauding not just because they know how innovative it is from a users point of view but also because of how far beyond anything else that runs in the browser has ever been before.
Some short sighted people are calling it arrogant because there is no business model or marketing plan,
Google could launch 10 products a year and fail at them all without worrying – all they need is one genuine success every 10 years and they will make more money than most other web companies put together.

Managing Social Media and Encouraging Employee Individuality with Southwest Airlines
This past week, HubSpot was in Dallas sponsoring and speaking at the Inbound Marketing Summit. There were many impressive speakers throughout the event, including an inspiring presentation by Paula Bergs, Manager of Emerging Media at Southwest Airlines.
Southwest is a fantastic example of a company that does not limit its social media activity and community engagement, regardless of the company’s large size. (You can follow Southwest on Twitter @southwestair.)
VP of Inbound Marketing Mike Volpe sat down with Paula after her session to ask her a few questions. Below is her interview.
At Southwest, the Emerging Media team manages the company’s social media presence. Each person owns a particular channel and decides how they can best vocalize Southwest’s messaging to fit the channel.
Nothing is regulated by the corporate legal sector. Instead of discouraging employees with rules and regulations, Southwest empowers employees to represent the company well.
Southwest encourages emoployees to be creative! David Holmes, Southwest’s famous rapping flight attendant became famous after rapping the safety instructions one day. A customer filmed David and put it on YouTube. Southwest thought it was fun as well as a good branding opportunity, so it promoted the video on its traditional and social media channels.
Since the video was published, David has been on Oprah and Leno, representing Southwest. Here’s the original rap:
What do you think? Does your company empower its to be creative on social media channels? How?

7 Reasons Why You Might Not Be Making Money As An SEO
Posted by JoelJonathan
This post was originally in YOUmoz, and was promoted to the main blog because it provides great value and interest to our community. The author’s views are entirely his or her own and may not reflect the views of SEOmoz, Inc.
I feel like a mosquito in a nudist colony because I just don’t even know where to start with this one. Let’s just go for broke and see what happens:
- You Can’t Manage People – Even if you think you can “out-SEO” Rand, Aaron Wall, and Wikipedia to boot while riding a scooter down a hill with one brain tied behind your back as you make fun of Matt Cutts’ momma to his face, then guess what? You still need some skill managing people if you ever want to scale your income up dramatically. After all, even multi-millionaire, 1 hour a day worker Markus Friend pays people to do all of the tedious tasks that he needs done for his mega popular and mega profitable dating website.
- You Aren’t Organized – You can only let your list of link partners’ contact info that you should have kept up to date go stale for so long or forget to pay your copywriter for so long or spend too much time trying to find the password for your client’s site for so long, etc. etc. before you begin to see a serious increase in stress and a serious decrease in your productivity and ultimately your money making potential.
- You Spend All Day on Forums/Blogs – If the majority of your time is spent reading about SEO instead of doing SEO, then your income will never be what it could be. Of course, I am not saying that reading and learning about SEO is not important, and in fact it is extremely important to always be learning, but you and I both know that it can be easy to justify what is really just mindless browsing as “SEO training”.
- You Have No Process – The value of your time decreases if you have to keep repeating and trying to remember steps that you should already have documented. Call it an SEO cheat sheet, call it a list of steps for researching a new niche, call it whatever you want to call it, but write it down and document what your plan of action is so you don’t waste valuable time thinking about what to do instead of thinking about how to best do what you need to do.
- You Don’t Take Risks – Whether this means striking out on your own to start your own firm to do SEO work for clients ($ potential if you are good but also some risk) or whether it means getting serious about spending some time and money to do in house SEO for your own website(s) ($$$ potential if you are really good but of course some risk as well), you have to take some risks in order to really maximize your SEO earning potential.
- You Are a Cheap Son of a Gun – If you don’t believe in yourself enough to invest in tools that will make you a better SEO, then good luck because that is all you have – luck. Think of yourself and your SEO education as an investment. Pretend you are putting yourself through “SEO School” and spend some money all the while realizing that this investment in yourself will pay off in with a higher future earning potential.
- You Treat SEO as a Hobby – I’m going to tell you something that you may not enjoy reading… SEO is work. There, I said it and now I feel better. SEO has fantastic opportunities to make a great deal of money if you are smart, willing to learn, and you work hard. However, the same principles for offline business success hold true online in the SEO realm as well. There is no magic elixir that shoots through your cable modem into your PC and right through your mouse into your fingers that makes any halfhearted lazy SEO effort you might muster up instantly fill up your bank account. Work smarter AND harder and SEO can make you a lot of money. Treat SEO as a hobby at your own risk if your goal is to make money and not just have fun.
I run a domain name tools website and I see a lot of awesome risk takers that work long hours and research domain names until they are blue in the face, and then they pounce on great domain names that will likely make them quite a nice sum of money in the future. On the other hand, there are some who maybe don’t put in the necessary research and just snap up what-ever.info piece of junk domain name they come across that strikes their fancy, hoping that their domain name “lottery ticket” will pay off big in the future.
Be someone who is dedicated to working hard and making a lot of money as an SEO. Hopefully these 7 reasons are a help to you as you strive to be the best SEO you can possibly be and make the most money possible.
BONUS REASON: “7 Reasons” just sounds better than “8 Reasons,” but maybe even the #1 thing that can hold back your long term SEO money making potential is a Short Term Focus. A long term focus wants to provide loads of quality content and offer an enjoyable user experience while a short term focus is concerned only with “gaming” the search engines or exploiting flaws in the system with no regard for long term user loyalty. Concentrate exclusively on the short term to your own money making detriment.
DISCLAIMER: I love SEO and think that SEO is a lot of fun. Money is, of course, not everything, and there is nothing wrong with doing SEO purely for enjoyment or as a hobby. That being said, making a lot of money doing SEO is also a lot of fun.
Aaron Wall – SEO Book On The ShoeMoney Show
On today’s ShoeMoney show my guest was Aaron Wall.
On the show we first discussed Aarons most recent blog post about getting inside the Google Searcher, which was is a total must read for anyone.
Then we got into my recentFree 12 week course, how it got over 13,000 signups in 4 days, and the conversion value of twitter. During this segment I reveal that right now I feel twitter is the best advertising medium out there and its only a matter of time until people ruin twitter with paid tweets.
Aaron and I both talk about how we have changed some of our core advertising focused and have learned a lot since starting our own products.
After the break Aaron talks about his SEO Training program, what it is and how he has marketed it. I love to have smart people on who are selling their own products. And not really pitch the products so much as talk about our marketing efforts and what we have found that works and doesnt work. Aaron was very open about how he is marketing his product and I had lots of questions for him.
Later on in the program I asked Aaron how he felt about some of the “scam” marketing efforts some of these guys are doing out there.
Aaron talks about not only that but we quickly digress into lots of other various experiences in having our own affiliates and products.
The show is packed with some really interesting content and I hope to have Aaron on soon to take some q&a from you!
Everyone knows I love to razzz the black magic snake oil SEO industry but honestly out of the very small handful of guys that give a lot of value Aaron is at the top.
I HIGHLY recommend you check out his SEO training program.
Thanks Aaron for coming on the show. I hope to have him back on in a couple weeks!
