Absence makes the heart grow fonder and we know online marketers already like the BIGLIST of online marketing blogs reviews. This new update that is decidedly focused on search engine optimization should start your week off right.

The Search Agents

While we have a good looking group this week, the Search Agents was the winner for the best looking Search Marketing blog. Not only does it offer a clever theme, but content and usability to boot. There are more contributors listed than most SEM agencies have in their employ. Content is balanced between SEO and SEM followed by everybody’s friend, Social Media. The Search Agents is the official corporate blog of The Search Agency, an integrated online marketing firm headquartered in Santa Monica, CA.

Let’s get to it with the last BIGLIST class of November 2009:

  • Actionable Insights – Covario isn’t just a leading San Diego company in the interactive marketing analytics space, it’s full of Covarians. What do those Covarians do when they’re not using their clever software to automate and analyze SEO and PPC? Why, they’re writing about industry news and updates, indepth analyses, strategic and tactical advice on a blog good enough to make it on the BIGLIST.
  • SEO Contrarian – What are the chances of another SEO having been a Combat Engineer in the Army? Except my stint was long, long ago. Ari Ozick has his opinions and even a Manifesto, which makes for interesting blogging, especially when mixed with skill and first hand experience. Don’t let the SEO Scum category scare you, just read.
  • Shark SEO – Dave Peiris works for iCrossing in London and besides playing with search engines all the live long day, he likes coffee, jaffa cakes, napping and designing clever linkbait. The good kind.  The blog has a very cool design but reading what’s on a good SEO’s mind is even better. And no sharks to be seen.
  • Best SEO Blog - With an awfully literal name, (oh wait, we do that too) this blog by Michael Martinez, Nicholas Ramirez and Gene Tapang from Visible Technologies puts out “the latest in search engine marketing tactics, the tried and true techniques.”  With posts back to 2007 there’s plenty of SEO insight to gain, which is a good thing in a world currently dominated by social media content.
  • SimpleFuzz – Jeremy Martin admits to his vices: webaholicism. Which of course, is a good thing when you blog, since that openness means the opportunity to exchange ideas. Say, on the topics of seo, social media, ppc, blogging or web design. This blog is a great resource for small businesses in Utah, where it’s written and beyond.
  • Holistic Search Marketing – Like TopRank’s BIGLIST, Peter Young (Head of SEO at Mediavest in Manchester) has his own list called TSMR (Top Search Marketing Resources) that you may want to get on. I can’t tell you how here, you’ll just have to visit his blog and find out. While you’re there, check out all the fine SEO and Google focused blog posts too.

PostHeaderIcon Xenu’s Link Sleuth – More Than Just A Broken Links Finder

There are literally a bazillion SEO tools on the internet (literally!), this post discusses just one such tool; Xenu’s Link Sleuth. Many people in the SEO industry are already aware of this tool but many people I’ve spoken to only treat the tool as a broken link finder. It’s so much more than that.

This post is aimed at those who haven’t heard of it before and those who do use it regularly – there are lots of nifty features that solve all kinds of SEO-problems and hopefully beginners and advanced alike will learn something from this post.

What is Xenu?

Xenu’s Link Sleuth is a FREE download (everyone loves free) that runs on all versions of Windows (but not quite on Macs unfortunately). It’s a lightweight download and I’ve never had issues with it crashing or hanging. In a nutshell it’s a site crawler and once you point it at a URL it will crawl around the site and spit out a report at the end. It’s main focus and branding is all about finding broken links on your site (so where you link internally to a 404 error) but I’ve found that I use it to solve a whole host of different SEO-related issues which I will explain below.

Problem – How do I find broken links on my site?

This is the most basic use of Xenu in my opinion, but also the most common use. Simply point the program at the homepage of your site, check ‘skip external’ to avoid it crawling the entire web, and set it going!

You can see that there is a handy section which reports any broken links that it finds, though in this case I’ve chosen a rather poor example since there are no broken links on the homepage of Distilled :-)

Problem – How do I get a crawl of my site into microsoft Excel?

The answer to this one, as you may have guessed is also Xenu! Simply choose the following menu option once the report is run:

Click here for a google docs of a sample report from the Distilled site. As you can see you get some really useful data such as:

  • The status code of all pages crawled
  • The type of page crawled
  • The title tag of each page crawled

Problem – How do I check the length of my title tags across my whole site?

Looking at the above data sheet – simply filter for html pages and then check the length of the column titled "Title" – this will give you the length of the title tag. Filter for any above 65 and bingo – there’s your to-do list!

Problem – How do I analyse my site’s information architecture?

Yep, you guessed it – Xenu will do this too. This one requires a little more explaining however. Firstly, you see that in the spreadsheet above there is a column for "level" – what this column tells you is the number of links away from the initial link that you entered the crawled page is. So in the example sheet all the pages have a level of 1 since I restricted the crawl to just those pages 1 link away from the homepage.

This is really useful information as it tells you how many clicks it takes to get to a given page on your site from the homepage. Useful information! Especially in a large site where you have multiple levels of information architecture and several different types of navigation. Below is a quick screenshot of a report run 3 levels deep on the site. I’ve pivot-tabled the data (zomg – excel ftw) and selected the following options:

Of course, the beauty of pivot tables is that I can double click each of those rows and see which pages are contained within each level. This is of course, a pretty basic application of the data. But you see that once you start getting more data you can do more powerful things.

The second application of the very same data is the useful links in/links out column which looks like this:

There are other ways of getting this data for your site, Linkscape does it for example, but the good thing about Xenu is that you get the data structured in Excel and you have all the other page metrics alongside it. There’s plenty more you can do with this but at a very crude level you can use it to identify pages with more than 100 links on the page across your site!

Taking this data to the next level – here’s a glimpse at what’s possible, an analysis of type of page vs number of internal links shows you that for this site (not the distilled site) the money pages are getting very few internal links compared to top level pages and something is broken in the information architecture:

Problem – How do I find any 302 redirects on my site?

Xenu to the rescue! In order to catch redirects on your site you need to modify one of the settings on the crawl preferences to "treat redirects as errors":

Then, when you run the report and export to excel redirects will no longer get the status code 200 but will get the true status code, be it 301 or 302! Perfect.

Problem – How do I check the indexing of a test version of my site?

Xenu of course! If your test version lies at a public URL such as testsite.distilled.co.uk then you can just point Xenu at that URL. However, if that’s not an option then you can even run Xenu off a local HTML file which is pretty nifty:

Problem – How do I generate an XML sitemap for my site?

Although there are many many ways of generating an XML sitemap for your site, Xenu does this in a quite nice (if not particularly customisable) way. This is perfect for small site owners with limited technical knowledge I think:

If only Xenu would do such a thing…. Wait, it does! Simply filter your excel download to image files, then the "Title" column is the alt text of the image:

Well that’s just a few of the many many applications of the Xenu tool – hopefully it’s inspired you to go out and give it a try – I know I use it a lot for all kinds of things. I mean, once you get your data into Excel the world is literally your oyster. Mmmmmm data oysters.

But wait! That’s not all – I reached out to Rich Baxter as I know he’s a very knowledgeable and smart SEO and he uses Xenu a lot. I asked him if he had any killer tips and here’s his killer tip. Thanks a lot Rich for getting me this at short notice:

Crawling web directories, looking for errors (By Rich Baxter)

Xenu’s not just a great tool to look inside your own site, it’s also pretty powerful for crawling external resources like directories, particularly if you’re looking for a domain to buy.

Try crawling dmoz.org, being sure to restrict Xenu’s access to “editors.dmoz.org”, but allow the crawler to “check external links”.

Quite quickly you’ll start finding “not found” URL errors from directory entries that might have been forgotten, on domains that may not yet have expired. Just sort by “status” in the crawl results table in Xenu. Here’s one I found earlier. I’m pretty sure that with the right offer via SEDO, the owner of fridgemagnet.org.uk (with its 634 sub domain links) might be interested in selling before the domain expires.

I’ve always found the “Copy URL”, Google cache and Wayback Machine links invaluable on a right mouse click on the results you’re interested in:

As a side note: If you are crawling external resources, try to be a good citizen and crawl slowly. Set your maximum threads to a very low level, so as not to get your IP banned by your target host.

They say those who were the first ones to do blogging are the lucky ones. Why? They make the most money, they get the most traction, they reap the best benefits. Almost a decade now since blogging started, nothing has changed that much. The rich grows richer and continues to thrive while those who were getting started never get past the startup stage.

I’d tell you what, I totally don’t agree with it. Im not rich, but I make good money and most people don’t. The equation has been still the same, 10% of bloggers make money, the rest don’t. Simple reason? There’s a big imbalance that’s happening right now. Let me explain it.

Guys like John Chow, Shoemoney and some others make good chunk of income through direct ad sales. And because of that, a lot of bloggers jumped into that without really having an idea of what to expect. You see the ratio is like for every 10,000 blogger selling space, there’s only 15 advertisers willing to shed money using blog advertising. Get my point?

Just the same as the already over AdSense Era. Some people revealed they earned good money by just copy pasting codes and poof. It’s been rehashed over and over and so basically what happened was it just became saturated. The guys who were making good with AdSense still make good up to now, while most are now disappointed because AdSense didn’t meet their expectation.

What Now?

We probably all heard the saying “Nothing is permanent”. In blogging, the things that worked about 2-3 years ago are probably obsolete by now. So too late to profit from blogging? Definitely not! The rules of the game is just simple! Destroy all those bloggers that are doing the same thing. Rise above the over saturated market with something unique. Take this, if everyone’s trying to make money from ads then why not go away from it and try different things? How about launching your own info product or maybe useful premium tools that would cater a certain market? Membership sites are still not dead too!

You see, there’s an unlimited option really. People make money because they think differently, they prefer to be discrete from the majority and more importantly they utilize it to their own advantage. Never be afraid to try out different schemes, different monetization models. After all, it’s not rocket science. Nothing in this world is rocket science I guess.

PostHeaderIcon You Need to See These Case Studies Before They’re Gone

Have you ever intentionally ignored something only to find out that you’ve been a fool for doing so?

This weekend I discovered what a fool I’ve been for ignoring a resource that could have been helping me make my business a lot more profitable.

Many of you will have heard of Jeff Walker and his wildly successful ‘Product Launch Formula‘ before. Every time he’s opened the doors on this training a lot of people talk it up as being ‘the resource’ to get if you want to make money from selling your own products online.

I’ve seen all the promotions come and go and… shamefully… I’ve ignored them all.

You see I thought I knew better. I thought I knew what I was doing. I thought I didn’t have much more to learn about this business. I thought that all the hype about this product…. was just hype.

That was until this weekend.

The Best Invested Two Hours I’ve Had for Ages

On Friday I found myself with an hour to spare. I’d seen a number of bloggers that I know and respect talking about Product Launch Formula again and decided to check it out for myself by taking a look at some of the free case studies that Jeff Walker is about to stop using due to the new FTC regulations.

As I hit play on the first case study I smugly thought to myself that I was just going to hear the same old same old teaching from another internet marketer.

Two hours later…. and as my wife called me (for the 4th time) to come eat my dinner – I realised that I’d been a fool. In front of me on my desk was a pad and paper, full of notes. The notes contained things I needed to investigate and think more about as well as action items that I plan to take this week.

Already I was learning stuff that I wish I’d known when releasing my own products earlier in the year.

I particularly found the Product Launch Blueprint video VERY useful.

Keep in mind that these case studies are just part of what Jeff is offering as part of his Pre-Sales process – I’m yet to pay a cent (also note that the case studies are online online for another 2 days so you should view them now).

What I’m discovering is that I’ve got a lot more to learn about developing and launching a product. I also discovered that Jeff’s teaching is not full of hype, that he delivers real value, that he’s passionate about what he does and that his teaching has helped a lot of people.

Why I like Jeff’s Teaching

Note: as you’ll see in the case studies, Jeff really emphasizes a number of things that I think are well worth noting:

  • Making money in this way takes work – if you’re not wanting to work, don’t get into the game
  • Many of the techniques talked about are particularly powerful in normal everyday niches/topics. Some say it only works in the ‘make money online’ niche – but the reality is that they work better in other niches where the strategies have not been over used.
  • Baby Steps are important – Jeff isn’t just into having a big launch and making a big payday all in one day – he’s into building momentum over time and building a sustainable business. His steps are baby steps, you don’t have to invent the wheel all at once – you need to take steps towards your goal. As you do you build your income towards the big pay day rather than just arrive at it.

These three things make what Jeff’s teaching a lot more credible and powerful in my mind. I’ve come away from what I’ve seen so far really liking his approach.

As a result I’m going to be getting into more of Jeff’s stuff for myself and am enrolling with the next class for myself.

First off, I hope everyone among our US (and expat) readers had a great holiday weekend, filled with tryptophan and football (I know mine was). Second, I’m very excited to announce that SEOmoz PRO is launching our first ever webinar on Thursday Dec. 10th at 11am Pacific (2pm Eastern, 7pm London/UK). We’ve heard from a number of our members that they’d like to do some live reviewing of strategies and recommendations and get questions tackled in this format. I’ll be running the webinar personally, but I haven’t quite decided on a topic, and that’s one thing I need your help with.

Below is an embedded Google form (they’re pretty spiffy) with three short questions. We’ll use your feedback to help determine the content and format for the webinar, as well as gauge interest level.

 

 

We’ll have another blog post in the next few days announcing details (based on your requests + votes), as well as an email to all PRO members with a registration link.

Of course, if you have anything to add in the comments or any recommendations, we’d love to hear from you there, too. If this webinar goes well, we’re certainly planning to make it a monthly event for PRO members, and possibly offer some free webinars to the entire community. Four and a half years ago I started a blog filled with nothing but leads to available freelance writing opportunities. As I studied blogging and the various ways to generate traffic and revenue, the blog began to grow beyond my wildest dreams. After two years I was able to hire someone to help find leads and we branched out to also offering daily tips and advice. After three years, I added two more bloggers to the roster and today, it’s a flourishing blog network for freelance writers complete with 8 blogs. It’s now the number one online community for freelance writers. At some point in the past couple of years, it occurred to me I didn’t have merely have a blog. I had a business. In addition to paying other bloggers, I can now draw my own salary and don’t even have to take on clients if I don’t want to.

Someone once suggested it was luck that brought me to this place, but I respectfully disagree. Luck had nothing to do with it. Building FWJ from a blog to a network to a business took a lot more than luck. It took hard work, dedication and a thick skin. When I stopped treating my blog like a hobby and began working at it full time, it became a place that was both profitable and popular.

How did I get here?

  • I put in more than an hour or two each day – My blog became a full time job. If I wasn’t blogging, I was planning the next day’s posts, analyzing traffic patterns, and networking with others. It’s a day job, it’s a night job, and it’s a weekend and holiday job.
  • I read everything I could about traffic, community, monetization and other strategies needed to become a successful blogger. Keeping apprised of the latest tips and techniques helped me to achieve new levels of blogginess.
  • I networked within – and outside of – the freelance writing community – Yes, I participated in discussions at other freelance writing blogs and forums, but I also visited with other communities. Freelance writers participate in various niches and genres, it only makes sense to branch out beyond the obvious.
  • I networked offline – I attended professional meetings, meetups and conferences, and met potential advertisers, potential readers, and community members and people with whom I could share ideas and learn from.
  • I attended classes – I attended sessions at conferences and at the local community college. I invested in online courses and seminars.
  • I aligned myself with some influential people – Being a part of other networks increased awareness of my own community and generated interest in my blog network.
  • I learned I have to spend money to make money – While blogging may be an inexpensive startup, the truth is, if I didn’t invest in design, bloggers for hire, technical assistance, classes and conferences, I may not have achieved this level of success.
  • Did I mention I put a lot of time and effort into my blog?
  • I didn’t wait until advertisers came to me – I sought out sponsors, played with affiliates and yes, even rocked the Adsense. Now though, I sell many private ads to businesses and individuals who approach me instead of the other way around.
  • I didn’t let negativity stand in my way – People can be mean – they still are. If I let it get to me I wouldn’t be writing this today.

That doesn’t sound like a whole lot of luck, does it?

The truth is, there were times I questioned my ability. I was also getting a little tired of moderating snarky comments by a few community members who like to bicker about wages and jobs. It was hard seeing people write out and out lies about me on their blogs or suggest I’m only here by luck and not talent . There were plenty of times I wanted to throw in the towel.

Last month when a major online brand inquired about acquiring FWJ, I realized I built something very important and I was very proud. Proud enough not to want to sell.

If I can take my little freelance writing job blog to new heights in only four and a half years, what can I do in another five? I’m looking forward to finding out.

Sure, you can have a blog. You can post once a day and have a few hundred visitors. Or you can treat your blog like you would a job. You can put your passion behind it and give it your all. You can work for someone else or you can do everything possible to grow your own business. With blogging, you get what you give.
